Bio.
DJ PhD made his debut on the "ones and twos" back in 1999, not long after stumbling upon turntable whiz DJ Q-Bert. He began to improving his DJing skills by dissecting Turntable TV videos and learning tips from friends. Soon after, he won a few local DJ battles, became a frequent nightclub DJ, and was the official DJ for the Q-Kids B-Boy crew (Kingston, ON).
In 2003, PhD bought his first music software, and his passion for musical production was born. Over the years, he learned the MPC 1000, the Roland SP303, and the Emu SP1200; starting out with the most hi-tech, up-to-date software, and then reverting to vintage, lo-tech hardware. It was kind of like reverse evolution, but his sound moved forward, becoming increasingly warmer, grittier, and thicker. |
PhD now produces for the likes of Grand Puba, Lord Jamar, Tame One, Rell, Sosh B, Sarah Martinez, Positive K, Remarkable Mayor, Rashid Hadee, Melatone, Louwop, and Juno-nominated soul singer Divine Brown (to name a few). PhD's beats have been featured in major web publications including XXL, hiphopdx.com, okayplayer.com, allhiphop.com, and hiphopcanada.com. His beats have also been spun by DJ's and radio stations worldwide including DJ Eclipse (RIOC show), Chuck Chillout (Kiss FM), Soulsociedad (Switzerland), and FLOW FM (Toronto). |
